With the escalating price of natural gas and other fuels, geothermal heating and cooling has become an increasingly popular alternative for residential and commercial applications. Where conventional methods burn fossil fuels to create heat, the geothermal process simply harnesses the existing energy of the earth. A mixture of water and non-toxic antifreeze is constantly circulated through a closed loop of pipe buried in the ground in vertical or horizontal bore holes. In winter, the earth’s heat is absorbed by the circulating liquid. Ground source heat pumps transfer this heat to the building; in summer, the process is reversed, thereby dissipating the heat from inside the building into the ground.

Kent Penning is a Renaissance man who loves what he does—helping to multiply an increasing number of satisfied customers from the work of Cold Craft, his company in the southwestern San Francisco Bay Area, established in 1991. Aside from enhancing Cold Craft’s reach, his interests range from martial arts to motorcycling, to teaching HVAC for San Jose City College, and enjoying fine wines. Always striving to learn about business operations himself, Kent is active in a local entrepreneurs organization. (Motorcycles and fine wines?) Like we said, a Renaissance man!

With degrees in Environmental Studies and Law and Administration, the principal, Justin Malan, has formal training in the core disciplines impacting the legislative services needed clients. Over 25 years of experience in numerous fields of resource management, public and environmental health, environmental advocacy, renewable and clean energy development and sustainable development in state, local and private sectors.
Past positions held include: Executive Director, California Ocean Science; Executive Director, California Aquaculture Association; Founder and Executive Director, Marine Sanctuary and Estuarine Reserves Foundation; Founder and Executive Director, World Sturgeon Farmers Association. Justin acquired an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of California’s environmental statutes and regulations, particularly the Public Resources Code, Health and Safety Code, Fish and Game Code and Government Code. Has sponsored, written and guided, the passage of over 50 bills in these particular areas.
Justin provided critical support for California Geo in the creation and passage of Assembly Bill 2339, signed by the Governor in 2012. It instructed state regulatory agencies to help identify barriers to geothermal heat pump deployment in California, and to coordinate with each other to accomplish this.
Enertech Global is a full line geothermal heat pump manufacturer, marketing products under the GeoComfort, Hydron Module, TETCO, ECONAR, HydroHeat and GeoSource brand names. Enertech’s products have the highest heating capacities in the industry, lowering the requirements for backup heat.
Tim Wright is the Residential Sales Manager for Enertech serving both Canada and the United States marketplace. Prior to Tim joining Enertech, he held the National Sales Manager position for a recycled insulation products company. Tim has been involved in the renewable and energy conservation industry since 1988. Over the past 28 years, Tim has worked closely with Architects, Engineers, Builders, Inspectors, HVAC Manufacturers, Distributors and Dealers. Having touched all facets of the industry gives Tim a well-rounded understanding of what is important for each sector of our industry. Tim and his family reside in Ringgold, GA.

Major Geothermal (MG), formed in 2001, is a specialized ground source heat pump system design, forensics and controls firm, based in Wheat Ridge, Colorado (Denver area). Our key personnel have over 160 cumulative years of mechanical experience.
MG designs and consult on projects nationally and worldwide. Commercial projects includes government, institutional and private facilities, from small specialized applications of less than 1,000 ft², to multipurpose facility projects of over 500,000 ft². Our primary client base are mechanical engineers and architects who require experienced closed loop ground heat exchange design support.
Over the past few years Major Geothermal has been increasingly retained by numerous end-users for forensic evaluation of ground source heat pump systems including expert witness work for construction defect litigation. We have repeatedly proven our firm’s technical competence by identifying and confirming the issues of problematic commercial level GSHP system, providing multiple options to correct and resolve these installations.
Martin Energetics is the dba of a consultancy that first operated as a residential design and solar thermal sales and installation effort in the early 1980s that included contract training for residential energy auditors and Title-24 workshops for California SMACNA. Its Principal was a full-time college instructor at the time and his remote location in the northern Sierra Nevada did not support this side business.
When Bill’s retirement from 35 years of teaching came in 2006 and plans for his “last house” were being finalized with geothermal in mind, the Martin Energetics moniker was revived. Within a three year period, a frenzy of activity ensued. Bill designed and built that house as the general contractor and electrician, and designed the geothermal system it carries today. He also was project coordinator on a 7-ton, two heat pump system in the same community. He went to Stillwater, Oklahoma for his installer certification, joined CaliforniaGeo, and became emphatic about carbonless Zero Net Energy.
His all-electric home completed its first year as a solar NEM customer of PG&E in November, 2015 and demonstrated Zero Net Energy positive performance by exporting 1,500 Kwh more to the utility than was used. Bill serves as CaliforniaGeo’s President.
Ms. Meline is the firm’s principal engineer and owner. She has 24 years of mechanical engineering experience and over 30 years of experience in the construction industry. Ms. Meline has a strong background in project and construction management and design engineering. She has prepared HVAC and plumbing designs for commercial, educational, industrial, residential and government buildings throughout California, Nevada, Colorado and Kansas.
Ms. Meline is a LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Geoexchange Designer by the Association of Energy Engineers. She is Standards Subcommittee Chair of ASHRAE TC6.8, the Technical Committee on Geothermal Heat Pump and Energy Recovery Applications, Co-Chair of IGSHPA’s Standards Committee and holds memberships with ASME, ASHRAE, GEO, IGSHPA and CaliforniaGeo.
Ms. Meline is a founding member and past Chair of CaliforniaGeo.
Ms. Meline is an ASME Fellow and is a recipient of ASME’s Dedicated Service Award. The business community has also recognized Ms. Meline and Meline Engineering Corporation (MEC) for its commitment to fostering an outstanding workplace. DRY & WET UTILITIES: Precision Directional Boring, Inc. provides horizontal directional drilling services to steer over, under, or around buried utilities. We can curve the bore path to go around buildings or even drill under buildings if necessary. The electronics inside our drilling tools allow our operators to locate the drillhead with precision, ensuring that utilities already in place are not damaged.
When the drill has navigated past the obstructions and exited at the desired spot, we can pull back the conduits you need. These conduits can be used for gas, electric, telecommunications, or virtually any other use. We can pull back almost any material you need.
REMEDIATION WELLS: A horizontal soil vapor extraction system has a longer interval of screen in contact with the contaminated zone and provides a greater recovery in the vertical dimension, creating a much greater zone of influence than typically can be achieved with vertical wells. Horizontally drilled extraction wells are therefore more efficient and are also less likely to short-circuit to the atmosphere than those installed by trenching, since the soil column is not disturbed during the installation process.
In a horizontal system, the line acts as both the recovery and the conveyance lines. The same pipe provides both the screened section to extract vapors and a blank section to carry the vapors back to the surface. A single pipe can thereby replace both a series of vertical wells and the near-surface trenched conveyance lines required to transport the extracted vapor to the treatment system. We have installed these horizontal soil vapor extraction systems at dozens of sites where there was no disruption of normal site activities.
ROCK DRILLING: Precision Directional Boring uses Ditchwitchs’ All Terrain technology drill & steer in the rockiest of conditions. This system can steer, drill and backream in just about any type of soil—even solid rock—up to 1600 feet.
ON-GRADE SEWER: Precision Directional Boring utilizes AT technology along with a laser guidance system to achieve on-grade pipeline installation that can accurately install to within 1% of fall.
VACUUM EXCAVATION: Vacuum excavation is the latest technology using kinetic energy in a high velocity air stream to penetrate, expand, and break up soil. When compared to water or other excavation methods, air accomplishes difficult excavating tasks with speed and efficiency. The result is increased production and reduced cost. In addition, there are added safety benefits for both the operator and utilities. Vacuum excavation is the clear choice for safe and efficient locating of underground utilities.
TRENCHING: Our experience ranges from mass excavations and deep trenching in complex urban environments to long-haul trenching projects in rural communities.
