Meet Your Instructors (Module 3)
Steve Kavanaugh, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, Fellow ASME
Kavanaugh is a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama and owner of Energy Information Services. He is the author HVAC Simplified (ASHRAE, 2006), primary author of Geothermal Heating and Cooling (ASHRAE, 2014) and primary author of Ground Source Heat Pumps (ASHRAE, 1997). He has presented 160 GSHP and HVAC short-courses to 5000 attendees and numerous seminars at societal meetings. He publishes the quarterly, Outside the Loop: An Alternative Newsletter for Skeptics of Conventional HVAC and GSHP Wisdom. He maintains the informational and free software website, www.geokiss.com and has lived in a GSHP heated and cooled home for over 40 years.
Ed Lohrenz, B.E.S., CGD
Ed has worked in most facets of the ground source heat pump (GSHP) industry since the early 1980’s… as an installing contractor, equipment supplier, manufacturer and designer of commercial GSHP systems. Ed is the author of the Certified GeoExchange Designer course that has been adopted by IGSHPA / Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and has taught the course across North America and Internationally with students from over 20 countries.
In 2013, Ed founded GEOptimize Inc., a firm specializing in the design and implementation of commercial GSHP systems. He has pioneered a number of innovations in the GSHP industry, including one of the first ambient temperature district geothermal utilities (owned and operated by the Town of Gibsons, BC as a geothermal utility) the integration of ice storage to reduce the peak electrical demand of a geothermal system and the development of a heat dissipation / snow melt system for a cooling dominant retail store (IKEA Store, Centennial, CO).
Ed has been directly involved in over 30,000 tons (105 MW) of installed heat pump capacity in applications across North America and internationally.
Lisa Meline, P.E. Principal
Ms. Meline is principal engineer and owner of Meline Engineering located in Sacramento, California. She has over 30 years of mechanical engineering experience in the construction industry.
Ms. Meline is a licensed professional engineer and a Certified Geoexchange Designer. She is a Past Chair of ASHRAE TC6.8, Geothermal Heat Pump and Energy Recovery Applications, Past Chair of IGSHPA’s Standards Committee, and serves on the Technical Committee for ANSI/CSA/IGSHPA C448.
Ms. Meline is an ASME Fellow and one of the founding members of the California Geothermal Heat Pump Association and its first lifetime member.
